The New Emergency Family Shelter is Now Open!

In a perfect world, no family would experience hunger, medical care would be available to all, and every family would know the security of a permanent home.

However, for thousands of families in Frederick County, the reality is far different. Since 2014, Beyond Shelter has offered the only Emergency Family Shelter in Frederick County to help families in need.

In March 2022, with the help of the Frederick community, we successfully opened a new Emergency Family Shelter. Together, we reached the $3.5 million goal that funded the renovation and construction of the White-Hayward Farmhouse, start-up costs, and the establishment of an endowment fund to support the program in perpetuity.

Now, the farmhouse provides temporary housing and supportive services for up to ten families at a time, offering private suites with personal bathrooms, laundry rooms, a community kitchen, a living and dining area, counseling rooms, and a children’s playroom. In addition, compassionate staff provide integrated case management and support to assist families in achieving their goals of securing permanent housing and a road map out of poverty.

With gratitude, we thank you for making all of this possible.

Want to support the Emergency Family Shelter and the services it provides? Make your contribution to the Emergency Family Shelter Endowment Fund.

A gift to the Emergency Family Shelter Endowment Fund established at the Community Foundation of Frederick County will ensure the financial stability of future emergency shelter programming.

Beyond Shelter Frederick is the beneficiary of a generous gift from the Carole June Benson Estate. The Coalition has honored Carole’s legacy by naming the Community Living and Dining Rooms at the new Emergency Family Shelter in her honor. Additionally, a portion of her gift established an endowment fund to support the Emergency Family Shelter in perpetuity, continuing Carole’s legacy of helping others. The Fund is held at the Community Foundation of Frederick County.
